In January of 2024, the Village of Great Neck Plaza hosted a United Against Hate Conference. The Conference was a prelude to Martin Luther King Day and was held to unify the community in confronting the increase in hate crimes in recent months. The panel of speakers included SHAI Board Member, New York State Supreme Court Justice Mojgan Cohanim Lancman; Steve Chen, Co-President of the Great Neck Chinese Association and GNPS Trustee; Karen Boykin-Towns, Vice Chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors; Rabbi Marc Schneier, President of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding; and Imam Shamsi Ali of the Jamaica Muslim Center. The forum was moderated by Great Neck Public Schools Superintendent Kenneth Bossert. The forum was an opportunity for SHAI to represent the lived experiences of the Iranian Jewish community in Iran and here in the United States. Judge Lancman reflected on the prejudice and hardships Iran’s Jews faced as second-class citizens and the recent portrayal of the same community as oppressors. Panel members all agreed, through their shared experiences, that dialogue and discussion with various communities was the way towards reaching understanding and tolerance.
