During Shabbat of September 27th and 28th, the SHAI community and Temple Israel of Great Neck gathered to meditate, heal, sing, and pray in advance of Rosh HaShana. Engaging a multi-generational and multi-ethnic crowd, Hazzan Brian Shamash led the service, and a magnificent ensemble featuring vocalist Miriam Bursky-Tammam enhanced the Shabbat prayers. Following havdalah, they were joined by an ensemble which integrated and incorporated Mizrahi, Sephardi, and Ashkenazi nusach and piyyutim, fusing voices in Persian, Moroccan, Babylonian, and Ashkenazi Selichot traditions. Special thanks to Dr. Moshe Haim Ostad whose original renderings of the Persian Selichot petitions were authentic and the ideal complement to the evening.
